Bits of Information

PLEASE NOTE:

We have the base of the information that we want on this page. As time goes by, we will/may add addition information and links.

A special "Thanks" to Mary Haas at Haas Horse Farm. She has provided numerous links for me to add on here.

We are happy to add a Bits of Information page to our website. We hope you find the following information interesting and helpful. Please feel free to share/use the information on this page. We just ask that you give credit to the source, as we have next to each title.

The first section of this page contains Color Information (2006 AQHA Color Statistics, Color Possibilities, How Is Each Color Formed, Coat Color Testing, and Links About Colors and Genes). The second section of this page contains Pedigree Research (Looking for Pedigrees?). The third section of this page contains Health Information (Body Condition Scoring, Your Horse's Vital Signs, Paste De-worming Schedule, and Vaccination Schedule).

  • Color Possibilities (Courtesy of Animal Genetics Incorporated)

Have you ever wished their was a system that you could put in the color of the sire and dam, and see what possible colors you could get from the cross? Well, there is! Animal Genetics Incorporated has a Offspring Coat Color Calculator that will do just that for you and best of all, it is easy to use. Click here to be re-directed to their website.

  • How is Each Color Formed? (Written by Meghan Jensen at Pretty Quarter Horses)

I have tried to make it as easy as possible to understand the breakdown of each color. Truthfully...equine colors are amazing, though at times may seem confusing. Every time you turn around there is a new gene, new test, new shade of each color, etc.

There are three registerable base colors: Black, Sorrel/Chestnut, and Bay.

There are three registerable *with the exception of smokey black* single cream dilute colors: Smokey Black (Black + 1 copy of cream gene), Palomino (Sorrel/Chestnut + 1 copy of cream gene), and Buckskin (Bay + 1 copy of cream gene).

There are three registerable *with the exception of smokey cream* double cream dilute colors: Smokey Cream (Black + 2 copies of cream gene OR Smokey Black + 1 additional copy of cream gene), Cremello (Sorrel/Chestnut + 2 copes of cream gene OR Palomino + 1 additional copy of cream gene), and Perlino (Bay + 2 copies of cream gene OR Buckskin + 1 additional copy of cream gene).

There are three registerable dun dilute colors: Grulla (Black + 1 or 2 copies of dun gene), Red Dun (Sorrel/Chestnut + 1 or 2 copies of dun gene), Dun (Bay + 1 or 2 copies of dun gene).

There are three registerable roan modifier/colors: Blue Roan (Black + 1 or 2 copies of roan gene), Red Roan (Sorrel/Chestnut + 1 or 2 copies of roan gene), Bay Roan (Bay + 1 or 2 copies of roan gene). *Note that any color can carry a roan gene...it is just that AQHA does not recognize them when you register your horse(s).

There is one registerable modifier/color: Grey (Any color + 1 or 2 copies of grey gene/modifier). *Remember grey is a dominant characteristic.

These genes/colors can also be together on the same horse. For example a horse could have a cream gene, dun gene, and grey gene all at once. Or maybe they are a double (cream) dilute with a dun gene. The combinations are endless.

AQHA recognizes 17 colors. They are: bay, bay roan, black, blue roan, brown, buckskin, chestnut, dun, gray, grulla, palomino, perlino, red dun, red roan, sorrel, and white.

  • Your Horse's Vital Signs  (Information Courtesy of Equusite.com)

Average Normal Temperature: 99 to 101 degrees F

Average Pulse for an Adult Horse: 30 to 40 beats per minute

Average Respriation Rate for an Adult Horse: 8 to 15 breaths per minute

Hydration: Use the Pinch Test- pinch the skin on your horse's neck, the skin should flatten in 1 to 2 seconds. If not, it may mean that your horse is dehydrated.

Capillary Refill: Press your thumb against your horse's gums for 2 seconds, the pink color should return to where you were pressing within 1 to 2 seconds.

Mucous Membranes: The coloring of your horse's mucous membranes (lining of gums, eyelids, and inside nostrils) is an indicator of blood circulation, as is capillary refill *listed above*.

Moist Pink: Healthy normal circulation.
Very Pale Pink: Capillaries contracted, indicates fever, blood loss or anemia.
Bright Red: Capillaries enlarged, indicates toxicity or mild shock.
Gray or Blue: Severe shock, depression and illness.
